TEACH Speech Meet

March 31, 2009   1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Please bring cookies, donuts, or breads to share.

Speech selections will be chosen by you from dramatic poetry, humorous poetry, historical documents, costumed monologue ~ dramatic, humorous, or historical, Scripture or other writings of a challenging yet appropriate length.

The following information must be submitted to the Coordinators:

  •    the student name,
  •    age,
  •    grade level, and
  •    a name of the selection.

To assist you in your preparation and for better understanding for what will be judged ... here is a listing of what the TEACH Speech Meet Judges (Miss Joyce Aiello will assist in the judging this year) will be evaluating:

STANCE - stand firmly on both feet, do not lean slouch or sway.

APPEARANCE - dress neatly and attractively - no distractions that would take the judges attention away from your speech

EYE CONTACT - your eyes should rove over the entire audience, making eye contact with the audience members.

VOLUME - speak loudly enough for all to hear. Vary the volume according to what point you wish to stress and to keep your tone from being monotonous.

PACE - do not speak to quickly. Speak slowly for all to understand but not too slow as to drag out your speech

PAUSE - a pause should only be used for emphasis

FACIAL EXPRESSION- your facial expression should be a tool for emphasis - the way you look at the audience sets the mood for your speech, a smile can do wonders

GESTURES - emphasis and expression with hands is an important technique, as long as the gestures are appropriate, natural and varied.

NERVOUSNESS - preparation techniques can reduce the effects of nerves. Take a deep breath before starting your speech.

Position your arms naturally at your sides when you are not gesturing.

VOICE EXPRESSION - a good speaker is one who

- speaks distinctly and with enthusiasm

- appears natural and self confident

- is relaxed and standing comfortably

- reacts to the audience and has a sense of humor

Most importantly, remember that is meant to be fun so relax and enjoy yourself - you are already a winner just by taking the step to participate.
