Children's Book Council http://www.cbc-books.org/index.html
The Children's Book Council is a nonprofit trade association of publishers of
trade books and related materials for children and young adults. Their goal is
to enhance public perception of the importance of reading through creating
materials and events to support literacy and by distributing information about
books for children and young people. The site has tons of information and
resources that make it easy for parents and kids to learn about newly released,
age-appropriate books that they will enjoy, and to learn about favorite authors
and illustrators. Let me warn you right up front that they have recently
renovated the website and so some of the links on the menu yield error messages.
Don't be discouraged. The links that do work lead to great resources that will
help you encourage a love of reading at home, in classrooms, in libraries and
bookstores. Posted 04/05/05

Recommendations from T.E.A.C.H. Members at our
November 16, 2004 meeting:
* Words Their Way, Third Edition
by Donald R. Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, Shane R. Templeton, Francine Johnston
The publisher, Prentice-Hall Career & Technology
Written by teachers who are noted authorities in the field of spelling and word
study, this comprehensive text/sourcebook explores word recognition and spelling
skills K-12 -- with a K-8 emphasis. Based on extensive observations and
experiences in real classrooms for more than 15 years, it combines discussions
of theory and practical assessment tools and techniques with over 250
ready-to-use word study, spelling, vocabulary, and phonics activities presented
in a developmental sequence from Preliterate through the Derivational Constancy
stage. It shows students how to work with picture and word sorting, how to use
word banks at the beginning levels, and how to incorporate word study into
reading and writing.
Description: With more than 15 years of extensive observations and
experiences in real classrooms, the authors bring keen insight to this
activity-based book. They advocate basing student learning on the appropriate
developmental level. This philosophy is supported with more than 250
ready-to-use word study, spelling, vocabulary, and phonics activities presented
in developmental sequence, from the Emergent through the Derivational Relation
stage. For educators and school administrators.
* The Well-Trained Mind - A Guide To Classical Education At Home
by Jessie Wise and Susan Bauer
The Well-Trained Mind, a book published in 1999 by W.W. Norton, serves as a
resource for parents wanting to educate their children according to the
classical model of education. Their site, www.welltrainedmind.com
, complements the information in the book, providing updated resources,
articles, links, and other information useful to parents who are actively
involved in their family's education.
* First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind
by Jessie Wise
A two-year beginning grammar and writing course. Parents can assure their
child's success in language arts with this simple-to-use, scripted guide. First
Language Lessons uses picture study, and other classical techniques to develop
the child's language ability in those first two all-important years of study.
First Language Lessons is a complete beginning grammar and writing text that
covers a wide range of topics including parts of speech, forming complete
sentences, beginning writing, storytelling and narration skills. Parent/child
scripts provide a flexible framework for each lesson, both saving time and
lending confidence to the parent. The scripted exercises also train a child's
ear so that she uses correct grammar. Original, up-to-date, clear, illustrations
make picture study both engaging and effective. Visit www.peacehillpress.net
for additional resources and information.
* If You're Trying to Teach Kids How to Write, You've Gotta Have This Book,
by Marjorie Frank
A how-to book for understanding and working with the whole writing process, an
at-your-fingertips source of excellent and creative ideas for starting specific
activities, and a ready-when-you're-in-need manual for solving writing
problems.
* Accelerated Christian Education
www.schooloftomorrow.com
Drawing on their experience, expertise, and knowledge of how children learn,
Accelerated Christian Education staff research and develop curriculum that is
highly motivational and challenging. Editors and proofers, working closely with
the writers, review and polish all manuscripts. After final approval,
word-processing personnel typeset the content, and graphic artists enhance the
text with interesting and colorful illustrations and photographs. Core
Curriculum Provides Students' Basic Educational Needs The core curriculum
includes the six basic academic disciplines that provide students' essential
educational needs: math, English, Literature and Creative Writing, social
studies, science, and Word Building (spelling). Each core curriculum subject
contains 156 PACEs beginning with preschool and ending with level 12. Exceptions
are math (which contains 144 PACEs), Word Building (which concludes with level
9), and Literature and Creative Writing (which begins with level two and will
conclude with level 8.) Each curriculum level course consists of 12 PACEs.
Normally students complete a minimum of 70 PACEs each in one academic year;
however, this varies according to the students' abilities and the school's
efficiency. Students normally keep academic balance in the subjects in which
they are working and complete about the same number of PACEs in each
subject--that is, after they have completed gap PACEs. Students who are more
skilled may progress at a faster rate or may accelerate in the areas of their
academic strengths. Slower students are encouraged to do their best, but are
able to work on their levels of proficiency and proceed as they are capable.
Note: The core curriculum is enhanced with videos and computer software.
Typical students work daily on one PACE at a time in each of the six subjects.
The PACEs may be on varying levels, according to the students' achievement in
each subject and according to their academic prescriptions based on their
diagnostic test results.
* Winston Grammar
www.winstongrammar.com
The purpose of The Winston Grammar Program is to help students understand the
structure of language and comprehend the principles of traditional grammar. The
Winston Program uses innovative means to achieve conventional ends. It does away
with the traditional grammar textbook, lecture approach, and heavy emphasis on
memorization. Instead, it gives students a set of color-coded clue cards and a
book of exercises, which together generate multi-sensory activities: Moving,
Seeing, Hearing, and Speaking. Repeated use of the cards results in the
students' acquisition of knowledge with little or no memorization required.
* How To Teach Konos ... Audio Tapes
Extremely informative and instructional with tips, techniques and strategies to
use with any curriculum. These tapes are in our T.E.A.C.H. Library!
* Progeny Press Study guides for literature from a
Christian perspective.
www.progenypress.com
Literature is the perfect place for children to learn about the world.
Literature is a plunge into an imaginary world--giving readers a chance to
experience, through imagination, life at its best and worst--and to learn from
that experience. However, literature is always subjective to the author and
carries a subjective and imposed value system. The perspective may be
conservative or liberal, Freudian or Jungian, Christian or humanistic, but it is
a biased perspective.
God's word is the source of truth. That is why Progeny Press publishes study
guides for literature that provide teachers and students with questions and
comparisons from the firm and timeless foundation of the Bible.
Progeny Press study guides include: vocabulary exercises comprehension,
analysis, and application questions introduction of literary terms background
information discussion of related Biblical themes suggestions for activities
related to the reading a complete answer key . . . and more!
Teaching, Not Preaching Progeny Press study guides do not assume that the
student is a Christian, nor do they try to convert the student. Our goal is to
teach students of all ages to examine what they read, Christian or secular,
classic or contemporary, and value the truth it contains as measured against the
Bible. Because the Bible has withstood 4,000 years of examination and challenge
and continues to be revered as one of humanity's greatest sources of wisdom, we
believe it is the foundational standard of measure.
