American Expedition Day 2009
January 30, 2009 Set-Up: 5:30
pm 6:15
pm Program: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Famous Americans Program
-
Select your favorite
state. Each student needs to select
their favorite state early. First come, first served.
-
Does your state have
a famous American? Yes? Great!
Then prepare to transform yourself into this
famous person by costume or character and be prepared to recite from memory
or read a three or four line speech about who they were. Little ones can
pick a few things they know from memory.
-
Does your state have
a famous American? No? No problem.
Simply pick any famous
American of your choice, but check with Mrs. Rose first to make sure that
person hasn't already been selected by someone else.
-
Register your state
and famous person with Mrs. Rose at
abetterworld@earthlink.net.
-
Special Report:
Students are
encouraged to study their famous American and complete a special report to
be viewed at their state's station. No length requirement. Just enjoy
learning about the famous person and share it with everyone. Are you an
artist? Don't forget to include an original portrait of that person at your
state station for all to enjoy.
-
Three-Part Display
Board: All
states are required to be displayed on a three-part display board for
maximum viewing pleasure.
Here is the best part:
students will perform several patriotic songs as a group at the beginning of our
American journey! Songs like: The Fifty Nifty United States, Yankee Doodle
Dandee, and God Bless America. Each student will be given a CD to practice the
songs and words at home until January. Each family may pick up their CD in order
to practice the words/songs at home: Tuesday, January 6, at First Baptist Church
in Howland, anytime between 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. This is the same day as our
National Geographic Bee which begins at 1:30 pm. If you are unable to pick up a
copy of the CD please contact Elaine R. to make other arrangements.
All American Challenge:
Can we represent all fifty states?
We don't think it has ever been done before --
are we up for the challenge?

Past American
Expedition Day Information
Every
other year T.E.A.C.H. alternates American Expedition (United States) Day
with International Day. For American Expedition Day the student selects
and submits to the event’s coordinator(s) the state of his/her choosing that
he/she wants to complete a project / display / report on. It is requested
that each student use a 3-part display board that stands on its own.
"Show and tell" items may be placed on their table. Each student
is asked to bring flag or state stickers to place in "visitor's"
passports! If the student so desires he/she may dress in an associated
costume.
Here is the listing of items of information that
will spark your personal study and are recommendations for your “Know Your
State” display for T.E.A.C.H.’s American Expedition Day:
* state flag; state symbols
* capital city
* landmarks (mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, etc.)
* map of your state inside map of the U.S.
* bordering states
* industries
* entrance into Union
* area and population
Other facts to include if you wish:
* sports
* plants
* animals
* elected officials
* famous people
Each
student is asked to bring cookies or any food item that represents or is
related to their state.
The
actual event begins in prayer followed by twenty-five minutes of the student
standing by his/her display answering questions, pointing out interesting, or
fun facts and distributing their stickers.
The next thirty minutes is the allotted time for the students to "travel
around our wonderful country" to visit the other states and to discover new
facts about those states. Within their passports are specific state
questions they must find answers to on the display boards of the other students.
Subsequent to that block of time, there is a time of fellowship and
refreshments.
Everyone, not just
participants and their families, are encouraged to attend this event.
Make your project
informative, exciting, and a reflection of you! :-)
